New York Times

by admin on Feb.28, 2011, under General

Back in New York City and getting ready for two gigs I have coming up. March 6th at Rockwood Music Hall and March 9th at Lakeside Lounge.

Great last few days in L.A. Stayed two nights at The Best Western on Franklin Ave in Hollywood. Deja vu, I stayed there a few years ago on a writing trip with the country singer Jim Lauderdale, I had the best time there then and had the best time there now. I should live in that place right? I wrote two songs in my room last time ‘Fools Of Love ‘ and ‘Can’t Control Myself’ and I’m writing again this time. I think it’s the sun, it raises it out of me, or maybe it’s the picture of Elvis that i reckon they have on every hotel room wall.

Spent most of my time in the 101 Coffee shop downstairs hearing side after side on there juke-box of The Who, Pink Floyd, and Led Zepplin- I’ve never heard as much of those bands as I have in L.A- there everywhere, oh as well as The Stones and The Beatles. Non-stop British Invasion FM throughout the golden state wherever you are.

Have become friends with Nigel Mogg out here Bass player of The Quiorboys. We met at the first night of the Joseph Arthur residency and have become british brothers out in the west. Went over to his studio in downtown L.A on my last night, we invited a few friends over to jam. Good fun. Played a few of the new tunes and ‘Love’ and ‘The Wind’ went down best… a good omen! Was sad to be leaving but good to go out on a high.

Excited to be back in the Big Apple, caught up on the news in Libya at the 9th streets expresso, read the New York Times cover to cover, all change, 2011 gone off with a bang, strap in for 2012.

Bootleg Theatre

by admin on Feb.24, 2011, under General

A great night at The Bootleg Theatre. Great audience nice and busy for my support slot, really focussed crowd, I felt they were on every lyric and I could just go into my zone. I think the performance went well, everything went smoothly. Thankyou to Jo Arthur for having me play. He asked me to play next week too, but alas I’m headed back to NYC tomorrow. The rest of the night was fun. Joseph’s set was a blinder and we all ended up at a party in Beachwood Canyon. Heavy night but a great night.

I’d had one of those great dreamy days too. I woke up with this tune in my head, took a shower and it was still there and some word were coming through. It felt like a mantra, or a prayer. I went out to the back guest house in Venice to a quiet room, and wrote the whole thing out. The morning was outside the window everything felt clear. I didn’t reedit or redraft or reorder the verses. Just kept the whole thing as it came out and called the song ‘Love’.

This is a very new way of writing for me. Till now I’ve always felt like a pearl diver when I write songs. I gotta go down, down to pick something up, but to pick up that precious moment can take many dives, and you never know till you get to the surface whether you got your pearl. It’s a tough way of doing it, I been giving myself a hard time with this stuff for years.

I wrote the song ‘Downtown’ about this, and swore that when I finished the song, something would change. Something has changed it’s magic.

These new songs are written from a completely different place in me. A new creating. Have no idea how people are gonna take to them, I wanna know.

Have loved it here in L.A - I don’t wanna go :(

It’s my last night in town, I’m going to a studio tonight in downtown L.A to jam with some new friends I made out here, we’re gonna get the electric guitars out, plug in and have some fun.

Right now I’m trying to fix up. If this root beer doesn’t kill this hangover, I’m having a real beer

The Wind

Great first gig on the west coast of the states! I played the Hotel Cafe in Hollywood the other night and got a very warm welcome. First on the bill at 7PM but I had a great little crowd of friends and newfound friends. Come my third song I could see a gaggle of pals trickling in and congregating at the back by the bar, and familiar faces peeping out of the shadows taking tables at the front, great feeling for a first L.A show- thank you all for getting down there so early!

Hotel Cafe is a cool spot, I’ve heard much about the place and it lived up to it’s reputation. Great sound and stage… and a piano!

Getting a cluster of new songs in the set too which is exciting. Been opening with this song ‘Downtown’ recently, played it at The Boogaloo first time in January and then again at The Half Moon, another new one I’m settling into is called ‘End Of A Dream’. I played both of these and a brand new one that I wrote here in Venice called ‘The Wind’ that one seemed to stand out from the applause- it was the first time I played it so I don’t know if the audience picked up on that energy, but a good reaction!

Couldn’t have asked for a kinder welcome from the people I’ve met here in L.A. Made some great new friends and little connections here and there which are exciting. Wanna keep writing while I’m on this travelers energy! Thanks to everyone who came out to the show.

While the cats away the gold bugs will PLAY!

by admin on Feb.10, 2011, under General

The Gold Bug club is happening at The Boogaloo in London tonight. It will be hosted by my sister Laura. If you see her wish her a happy birthday from me!

Gold Bug Club is taking off now, the last one Jan 13th was a full house. We had this great band on the bill ‘Hey Tourists!’ they’ve recently been touring with Babyshambles and have Drew McConnell on upright bass. They’re a Liverpool duo with John on guitar and Cheryl on vocals, well worth checking out

Thanks to everyone who comes out to support the night and all the musicians who play, you keep the show rollin!

Postcard from Venice CA

by admin on Feb.10, 2011, under General

Hello from Los Angeles! Been out here for over a week. Stayed the first few nights down by Venice beach in a place called Cadillac Hotel. Great spot, never seen the sun before in February. Caught Jim Morrison and the Doors being played on radio set down by the beach which was cool this is his spot! Went off to find the mural they have for him. He’s still the idol round these parts.

Took my guitar down to the beach, and made a few friends. Spent most nights in this joint The Venice Ale House, great fish tacos and a great pint too called Longboard from Hawaii.

Now staying at a friends apartment near Abbot Kinney. Glorious garden out the back, I’ve been writing a few new songs out there, one which seems to be standing out, might play it at Hotel Cafe on the 14th.

Went to a Regina Spector screening of her concert DVD ‘Live in London’ a few nights ago. Fancy screening room at The Soho house in Hollywood. Regina’s special. Never really listened to her properly before- I’m a convert. You should check it I think it’s out in the shops.

Soaking it all up, feeling creative, excited to be playing some gigs out here, loving the sun!
